Karst landscape
The park is part of the Dinarides karst region, one of the most impressive in the world. The Upper Lakes are larger with gently sloping shores — including Kozjak, one of the biggest. The Lower Lakes sit in a narrow canyon with steep banks. Cascading lakes form because of natural dams created by geological, chemical and biological processes.
Sunken waterfall
About 400 years ago Kozjak was divided into two lakes by a 40-metre waterfall. One dam grew so fast that rising water covered the waterfall and joined the lakes into one. On a sunny day you can still see the submerged barrier from the electric boat.
Sculpted by microorganisms
Natural dams and rock formations aren’t only chemical and geological — blue-green algae, bacteria and other organisms living on rocks (even underwater) help sculpt this ever-changing landscape.
Diverse fauna
More than 300 butterfly species and over 100 bird species live here. You may hear woodpeckers and owls. The park also protects Eurasian lynx, gray wolf and Europe’s largest predator, the brown bear — all endangered. Bears prefer to stay away from people.
